How Does Robotic Surgery Work?
Wondering how robotic surgery works? The da Vinci® surgical system enhances your surgeon's precision and delivers benefits such as less pain and faster recovery for gynecological procedures like hysterectomy and fibroid removal. Here’s how.

The thought of surgery can be intimidating, and if your doctor has recommended a robotic procedure, it’s normal to have questions. You might picture a robot independently performing surgery while doctors watch from the sidelines, but reality is quite the opposite.

With robotic surgical systems like da Vinci®, your surgeon has unparalleled visualization, surgical instruments that articulate with a greater range of motion than the human wrist, and tremor filtration that eliminates natural hand movements. In fact, robotic surgery offers significant advantages over traditional open surgery.

South Valley Women's Health Care specializes in robotic gynecological surgery in Bluffdale, Utah, and if you need a procedure, here’s what you need to know about how robotic surgery works.

How the da Vinci® surgical system works

First and foremost, the da Vinci robotic surgery system doesn't replace your surgeon — but it does enhance their capabilities. Think of it as the most sophisticated surgical tool available, translating your surgeon's hand movements into incredibly precise micro-movements inside your body.

The da Vinci system consists of three main components. The surgeon console is where your surgeon sits during the procedure, and they see a high-definition, magnified 3D image of your internal anatomy.

The cart is positioned next to you on the operating table, holding robotic arms that your surgeon controls from a console remotely. These arms hold the surgical instruments and a camera that provides the 3D visualization. The vision cart contains the imaging equipment that processes and displays the surgical field.

Your surgeon remains in complete control throughout the entire procedure, making every movement and decision. The robot simply translates those movements with enhanced precision, eliminates natural hand tremor, and allows access through tiny incisions that would be impossible with traditional instruments.

How we use robotic surgery in gynecology

Our team at South Valley Women's Health Care is trained in the da Vinci® system for a wide range of gynecological procedures. Robotic surgery is minimally invasive and incredibly precise, both of which are beneficial when it comes to delicate gynecologic surgeries.

We regularly use robotic surgery for procedures like hysterectomy, fibroid removal, endometriosis treatment, pelvic reconstruction, and more. For hysterectomy, robotic assistance allows us to remove your uterus through several small incisions rather than one large abdominal cut.

If you need fibroid removal but want to preserve your uterus, robotic myomectomy offers the delicate control required to remove fibroids while minimizing damage to healthy tissue. The 3D visualization helps preserve blood supply and allows careful separation of tissues and precise suturing.

For endometriosis treatment, the da Vinci® system's articulating instruments can reach lesions that are outside your uterus and in hard-to-access areas of your pelvis. The magnified view helps your surgeon identify and remove all affected tissue while preserving healthy structures.

The benefits of robotic gynecological surgery

Robotic surgery delivers precision that’s impossible with the human hand alone, and that brings a number of significant advantages over traditional open surgery.

With robotic surgery, you have a few tiny incisions instead of one long incision that could be six inches or more. The incisions required for robotic surgery are typically less than one centimeter each, and smaller incisions mean less tissue trauma overall.

The enhanced visualization allows your surgeon to identify and carefully control blood vessels, resulting in less bleeding during surgery. You're less likely to need blood transfusions, and smaller incisions also reduce your risk of surgical site infections.

Robotic surgery typically comes with significantly less postoperative pain, too. There's minimal cutting through abdominal wall muscles, and most patients require less pain medication for a shorter duration.

You're typically up and walking within hours of surgery rather than days, and you often go home the same day or after just one night in the hospital. You can expect to return to work, exercise, and daily activities much sooner than with open surgery — about two to four weeks instead of six to eight weeks or longer.

Not every patient or procedure is appropriate for robotic surgery, but for many gynecological conditions, it offers the best combination of effectiveness and minimal invasiveness.
